What You Need

to Know and

Steps for the

Inspeciton

Things you should know about Maryland State Inspection :
The Maryland law requires that all used vehicles undergo state inspection before they are sold or transferred. The seller of the car or the transferor is usually necessary to obtain the inspection certificate. However, the seller or the purchaser may get the inspection certificate for class E trucks, class F truck tractors, class G freight trailers, semi-trailers, and dump service semi-trailers. The purchaser then registers the vehicle with the MVA using the inspection certificate. If you use an inspection station that offers an electronic inspection service, the inspection certificate will not be issued; the inspection certificate is electronically sent to MVA.

Steps on obtaining a Maryland State Inspection Certificate for your vehicle
  • It would be best to have your car inspected for safety at an authorized Maryland State inspection station to get an inspection certificate.
  • The first step is to schedule your safety inspection by phone.
  • It would help if you inquired whether our station has the proper authorization to inspect your vehicle.
  • Ensure you correctly register your vehicle in Maryland or another state. Suppose you are unable to register your car because it has not yet been inspected, you may be granted a 30-day temporary registration for you to be able to be legally on the road and take your vehicle to an authorized Maryland State inspection station.
  • The safety inspection usually takes around 1-½ hours for most vehicles. However, if you are concerned with the time, you may need to check with us for your type of vehicle.
  • Our professional inspector will prepare an inspection report at the end of the safety inspection indicating whether or not your vehicle has met Maryland’s standards.
  • If your vehicle passes the inspection, our professional inspector will prepare and send an electronic report directly to the MVA with a copy to you.
  • You would need to take the copy of the car inspection certificate to any MVA branch office or a licensed tag and title service, together with the other required documentation for your vehicle to be titled and registered in the state of Maryland. Should the dealer own the car, he will generally obtain the inspection certificate for you (the purchaser), including the vehicle registration.
.
If Your Vehicle Does not Pass the Maryland  State
Inspection

  • The inspector will not issue the Maryland State Inspection certificate if your vehicle fails to pass the test.
  • Our professional inspector will provide you with the detail of the problem identified to be fixed. You may choose to take your car to any garage of your choice to fix the problem, or have the same inspection station fix the problem. In either case, the vehicle will have to be re-inspected by the same station and by the same registered inspection mechanic. You need to check with us for the reinspection fee before leaving our garage.
  • Should you decide to have the vehicle fixed with us, the reinspection fee is waived.
  • Rockville Auto Repair Shop will only inspect the defective part identified during the initial inspection should the vehicle be re-inspected within 30 days after the original inspection date and is driven for less than 1,000 miles.
  • If a new problem is visually observed during the reinspection, this new problem must also be repaired and re-inspected.
  • We will charge for each reinspection unless the repair can be visually verified or Rockville Auto Repair Shop has made the repair itself.
  • A new and complete Maryland State Inspection will be required if the vehicle is not inspected within 30 days or exceed 1,000 miles.
